Why do addictions develop?
Addictions develop as a result of an inability to sooth oneself and regulate one’s emotions. Addiction is characterized by a tendency to self-medicate through substance use (cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs) and behave in ways that bring instant gratification (such as sex, eating, and video games) for relaxation. These strategies have a fast-acting effect of relaxing the body and mind. If overused, they can become the go to means to cope with various stressors. These substances and behaviours help people quickly feel a sense of control. It is the instant gratification and satisfaction that deepens the addiction.
Unfortunately, the benefits are short lived and the problems don’t go away. In fact they pile up and become harder to look at. In the long run engaging in addictive behaviours turns out to be more harmful than beneficial and prevents people from feeling fulfilled and living their true purpose.
You don’t need to be an extreme case to start questioning whether you have an addictionproblem. Learning new coping strategies can help replace addictions and have long-term benefits.
If you have a serious substance addiction, you would first require detoxification and/or rehabilitation. I work only with cases of mild substance addiction and those who are in the stage of maintenance or harm reduction.
All behavioural addiction cases are welcome.
