Mood Swings
People who experience mood swings cycle through a range of various emotions, such as happiness, frustration, fear, and sadness. They have a difficult time finding stability within themselves, and often experience loss of control and an intense need to be in control. Behaviours associated with the need to be in control are addictive, and include, but are not limited to shopping, eating, working excessively, and drinking or using drugs.
Mood swings can occur rapidly and irregularly and can create confusion in how people feel towards themselves and others. This also means constantly questioning one’s choices, as their opinions and selections change with their mood. In healthy individuals, emotions signal helpful information about themselves and others and can be helpful in the decision-making process.
However, for some people, emotions and anxiety are present without a clear link to what is happening in their world.
Mood swings can be scary and frustrating and are impediments on many levels of function, self-worth, confidence, and stability. Making decisions based on how one feels inside can further contribute to a chaotic life style, which only amplifies the intensity of the mood swings.
Making sense of emotions on our own is hard and it is easy to get stuck in our heads and anxiety loops. The key to staying in control is to find the point of stability within oneself and choosing to operate from that aspect.
