Self-criticism
Self-criticism is defined as a negative attitude towards the self or as the act of evaluating ourselves in a negative way. When we engage in self-criticism we are placing ourselves in opposition to who we really are, and we become our own worst enemy. During self-critical moments we can experience emotions of anger, shame, and anxiety. We are also more likely to act in self-destructive ways and make bad choices.
Individuals who generally lack a strong sense of self-compassion are more likely to fall prey to their self-critical minds. It could also be that they were excessively criticized by their parents while they were growing up, and these judgments became so ingrained that they started to believe them. People can find anything and everything to be self-critical about, such as actions, decisions, personality, body image, and attitude.
As convincing as these thoughts may be, they have nothing to do with who we really are, and they impede on our ability to show up as our best selves in the world.
