Complex Trauma: Growing Up Within Ongoing Stress
Complex trauma can develop when a child grows up with repeated neglect, abuse, or persistent threat. The difficulty is not simply something that happened and ended—it is an environment the child must continually cope with, often with little control or reliable support. As the child grows, these experiences can shape their developing sense of safety, self-worth, and connection. Ways of protecting themselves—staying alert, suppressing needs, disconnecting, or adapting to others—may carry forward through different ages and into adulthood. From a somatic perspective, we gently explore how these protective patterns show up in the body and in present-day relationships, going at your own pace
Understanding Trauma Through the Body
From a somatic perspective, we explore how overwhelming experiences can continue to shape physical sensations, emotions, and protective responses. You may notice tension, feeling constantly on alert, shutting down, or feeling disconnected from your body. These responses can be understood with compassion as ways you adapted to difficult experiences. Together, we gently explore what happens within you and what supports a greater sense of safety and connection
How Somatic Trauma Therapy Can Help
Sometimes you understand why you respond a certain way, yet your body continues to react. Somatic trauma therapy brings attention to both your understanding and your felt experience.Together, we explore emotions, physical sensations, and protective responses that may have been carried in the body for many years. These can include longstanding tension, numbness, or a readiness to protect yourself that persists after the original experiences have ended. As you connect with these experiences, strong emotions and visceral bodily responses may emerge that are not always predictable or within conscious control. I explain the process and support you as it unfolds, making space to pause and attend to what you need.Going at your own pace means we approach the work collaboratively, with ongoing attention to your consent and capacity. Over time, this work can support greater self-understanding, connection with your body, and more choice in how you respond.
